The New Kent Basketball Academy (NKBA) was founded in 2023 by Ellen and Garrett Ross. NKBA is working with teachers, coaches, trainers and volunteers to build an academy focused on the development of basketball and the student athlete in New Kent County and its surrounding areas.

By partnering with New Kent County Parks and Rec, the aim is to provide quality instruction and support to families that have an interest in learning the game of basketball. Both Ellen and Garrett have spent the last 13 years volunteering and coaching in New Kent County.

Both Ellen and Garrett have their Masters in Education. Ellen was a physical education teacher for elementary and middle school and most recently has been focused on building Mental Training programs for schools and athletic programs. Ellen has also been teaching piano in New Kent the last 13 years.

Garrett has commercially taught training classes for over 20 years, including, photography, software development, design, physical fitness training and basketball. Most recently, Garrett has been leading the New Kent High School Boy’s basketball program as their varsity coach. Garrett played on a state championship winning team in high school and played college basketball at Southern Virginia University.

At the New Kent Basketball Academy, the focus will be on the fundamentals of the game. To help develop a skillset that magnifies team play and enables the individual to succeed with the help of their teammates.
